The academic edited volume Connecting Deliberation and Voting in Democratic Innovations has now been published! The volume brings together REDRESS research and relevant practices from the Netherlands and abroad. It is edited by REDRESS researchers Charlotte Wagenaar, Take Sipma, and Frank Hendriks.

Across four parts, the volume examines hybrid democratic innovations from different perspectives:

  • The first part introduces the concept of hybrid democratic innovations, discusses why further research on them is needed, and distinguishes five main types.
  • In the second part, authors from outside the REDRESS team highlight relevant practices from their home countries. They discuss experiences with the development, evaluation, and iterative refinement of different forms of hybrid democratic innovation in Belgium, Brazil, Ireland, the Netherlands, Spain and Switzerland.
  • The third part focuses on the perspectives of different actors. REDRESS researchers examine the perspectives of participants, the wider public, populist citizens, politicians and civil servants, drawing on survey research and case studies from the Netherlands.
  • The fourth part features reflections by leading scholars in the field of democratic innovations. From different perspectives, they reflect on the contributions to the volume and situate them within broader developments in the field. In the concluding chapter, the editors identify overarching lessons emerging from the practices, perspectives and reflections presented throughout the volume. They discuss implications for research and practice and outline promising avenues for future research on hybrid democratic innovations.

The book is published by Edward Elgar Publishing and is fully available open access via this link.
